Renewable energy capacity to reach 170 GW by March 2025 on moderation in module prices: Icra analyst

India is expected to add 38 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity by March 2025, reaching a total of 170 GW, according to an analyst from ICRA. The forecast is supported by policy backing and a decline in solar module prices. The capacity addition is likely to be aided by an increase in tendering activity, with over 16 GW of projects bid out so far and another 17 GW bids underway by central nodal agencies.

India curbs use of sugar for ethanol in 2023-24

The central government on Thursday banned diversion of sugar for ethanol manufacturing with immediate effect in ethanol supply year 2022-23. However, the supply of ethanol from existing offers received by the Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) from B Heavy molasses will continue, it said.

'Contentious' COP28 draft moots end to fossil fuel use

The UN climate conference (COP28) negotiating team released an ambitious draft text calling for a global stocktake, tripling renewable energy capacity, and phasing out fossil fuels. India's concept of Mission LiFE, focused on sustainable lifestyle and consumption, is included. The draft text acknowledges the need for transitioning to sustainable lifestyles and circular economy approaches. The COP28 aims to conclude the first-ever global report card on climate actions, which will guide future pledges in 2025.

CO2 emissions may hit record level this year

Despite record growth in clean energy, global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from fossil fuels are projected to increase by 1.1% this year, reaching a record level of 36.8 billion tonnes. The increase is mainly driven by China and to a smaller degree by India, which still has development needs to overcome. A Global Carbon Budget report states that there is a 50% chance of global warming exceeding the 1.5 degree Celsius threshold set by the Paris Agreement in about seven years.

India to become USD 5 tn economy early in Amrit Kaal: FinMin

India aims to become an advanced economy by 2047 and achieve a USD 5 trillion economy milestone. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) projects that India will reach this milestone by 2027-28. Minister Pankaj Chaudhary emphasized the importance of a robust rupee and macroeconomic stability in reaching the target. The government's policy interventions, including the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), Goods and Services Tax (GST), and increased capital expenditure, have contributed to boosting India's GDP.

HMSI recalls H'ness CB350, CB350RS to replace faulty parts

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) on Friday said it is recalling a certain number of H'ness CB350 and CB350RS units to inspect and replace faulty parts. It has been identified that due to an improper process being followed to manufacture the rubber parts of rear stop light switch there are chances of crack development on the rubber, the two-wheeler maker said in a statement.

India to support RE, draw line on fossil fuel, agri at COP 28

India, already a signatory to the Montreal Protocol on reducing use of Hydro Fluoro Carbons (HFCs) and other coolants used in refrigeration and air conditioning, feels there is no requirement for yet another framework on the same. Similarly, the Coalition for High Ambition Multilevel Partnership (CHAMP) proposed for COP 28 has not enthused India much.
