Cracker of season as vehicle sales soar

Delhi has broken the past five years' record for vehicle sales during the festive season this year. Over 80,000 vehicles were registered in November, the highest in a single month in the past five years. The number of vehicles sold in Delhi is already higher than in 2020-22, and with December sales still to be totted up, the sales could even put the record of 2019 into shade. Of the vehicles sold in November, 18,375 were motor cars and 56,727 were two-wheelers. The spike in vehicle sales can be attributed to the recovered economy and the rise in people employed as delivery executives.

Delhi's pollution increasing despite stubble burning coming down: Gopal Rai

Environment minister Gopal Rai stated that 36% of Delhi's pollution is due to vehicular pollution and 31% is caused by biomass burning. Despite a decrease in stubble burning incidents, the pollution level continues to rise. The city's air quality turned 'severe' with an AQI of 415. Measures have been taken to enforce GRAP-III guidelines and run special campaigns to prevent biomass burning. The transport department and Delhi Police have deployed teams to ensure compliance and a fine of Rs 20,000 will be imposed for violations under the Motor Vehicle Act-1988.

The court has given the government one week to fulfill its undertaking before the order comes into effect. The Delhi-Meerut Corridor is part of a larger RRTS project aimed at reducing vehicular pollution in the region.

Operators must have a fleet of at least 25 premium buses and provide digital tickets and fare collection. The scheme aims to provide world-class, comfortable, and sustainable travel options while promoting a greener future.

DTC and cluster buses behind over 150 road accidents in Delhi till November

DTC buses and Cluster Scheme buses in Delhi have been involved in a significant number of accidents, resulting in fatalities and injuries. Experts attribute the accidents to factors such as road design, poorly trained drivers, and inadequate enforcement of traffic rules. While the number of accidents this year was lower than last year, road safety experts emphasize the need for a conducive environment for buses, stricter prosecution and fines, and improved driver training and mental health assessment. Additionally, experts suggest dedicating bus lanes exclusively to buses and improving bus maintenance.

Fatal distraction: DTC buses trip on lack of enforcement, poor training

Four people were injured when a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus overturned in Rohini, raising concerns about the working conditions of bus drivers. DTC buses have been involved in 72 accidents this year, resulting in 19 deaths and 73 injuries. The recent accidents have been linked to drivers' health issues, including some drivers being found intoxicated while on duty. Drivers have called for stricter inspections and pre-trip checks to ensure driver fitness. DTC managing director has asked Tata Motors, which provides drivers for electric buses, to conduct health checks and eliminate drivers with health issues.

The Delhi government will implement the odd-even scheme from November 13 to 20, following directions from the Supreme Court on pollution control. The scheme, which restricts the movement of cars based on the last digit of their number plates, has been implemented twice before but was called off in 2017 due to non-exemption of two-wheelers. The enforcement action against vehicles violating rules in Delhi is being affected due to overcrowded impounding pits.
