Italian sportscar manufacturer Lamborghini on Thursday reported record sales in 2023 with worldwide deliveries exceeding 10,000 units for the first time, helped by the success of its Urus SUV. "2023 was the best year ever recorded," the brand said in a press release, with sales up 12.1% to 2.66 billion euros (USD 2.9 billion) and deliveries up 9.5% to 10,112 vehicles. Operating profit reached 723 million euros, up 17.8%, with operating margins widening to 27.2%, said Lamborghini, which is owned by German automaker Volkswagen.

Carmakers such as Mercedes, BMW, Audi and Toyota rolled out eight new models with eight-figure price tags in 2023, taking the number of such models in the country to 31, according to data collated by Jato Dynamics. The data does not include models from super-luxury carmakers such as Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Lamborghini, and Aston Martin. Carmakers said increased wealth creation, particularly among younger people, is driving the increasing demand for top-end vehicles, or TEVs.

The Italian super-car maker posted record sales of more than 10,000 vehicles last year as it introduced the Revuelto, its first plug-in hybrid model, and quickly racked up a two-year backlog of orders. Lamborghini is only slowly introducing electric vehicles with plans on track for its first battery model in 2028, years after competitors such as Ferrari NV.

Against retail of 52 cars in 2019, the company’s volumes have doubled over the past four years, led by the launch of the Urus SUV in Sept 2018.

European auto major Volkswagen Group's car sales in India grew around 8% year-on-year to 145,713 units in 2023. Of this, domestic sales stood at 101,465 units, while 44,248 units were exported. The group maintained steady sales momentum in 2023, with domestic sales soaring past 100,000 units for the second year in a row. Exports grew 32% year-on-year with 44,248 units shipped from India, underlining the company's expanding global reach.

The Group is present through Skoda Auto, Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche and Lamborghini brands under Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt Ltd (SAVWPIL). Audi’s revenue increased to EUR 16.9 billion. The operating profit climbed to EUR1.8 billion, while the operating margin of 10.8% was at the upper end of the strategic target corridor. The 43% increase in deliveries of electric cars demonstrates that the brand group is on the right track. In the company’s ongoing electrification journey, Audi has picked up considerable speed: In the largest model offensive in Audi’s history, the brand has announced the launch of around 20 new models between late 2023 and late 2025, more than ten of which will be all-electric, the company said.
