Indian consumer market sees significant drop in average buyer age across cars, smartphones, and TVs

Over the past 5-6 years, the average age of Indian consumers purchasing cars, premium smartphones, and large televisions has decreased significantly, indicating a shift towards younger demographics. Major car manufacturers like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai Motor, and Mercedes-Benz note a decline in the average buying age from the 40s to the mid-30s, with over 70% of electric car buyers being in their 20s and 30s. Similarly, the average age for purchasing Apple iPhones and large-screen televisions has dropped from the 30s to the late 20s to early 30s.

Government to issue fresh notification on ‘rear seat belt alarm’ in all cars soon

The road transport ministry will soon issue a fresh notification mandating the installation of 'rear seat belt alarm' in all cars. Car manufacturers will have six months to comply. The previous notification also included three-point rear seat belts and six airbags. The Motor Vehicle Act imposes a fine of INR 1,000 on rear seat passengers not wearing seatbelts.

Mercedes-Benz plans to double Pune plant capacity to 40k units

In a big step-up for the Indian luxury car market, Mercedes-Benz is looking to double installed capacity at its India factory to 40,000 cars per annum as the German giant charts out a strategy to maintain its lead in the country by launching new cars and expanding its footprint. The move, which is in early stages right now, will see the company expand annual installed capacity at its factory - located outside Pune - from the existing 20,000 units.

Asian refiners face diesel supply glut in 2024

Canada says all cars and trucks must be zero emission by 2035, industry unhappy

ZEVs must make up at least 20% of all cars sold by 2026 and at least 60% by 2030. Industry officials say electric vehicles (EVs) represented 12.1% of new vehicle sales in the third quarter of 2023. Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault said the regulations provided industry with the certainty it needed to address the issue of limited availability of EVs.
