Hindustan Motors Limited was established in the year 1942 and has its headquarters in Kolkata. The company is a part of the Birla Technical Services group. The company was considered the largest manufacturers in the country before Maruti Udyog stepped into the market. The company initially had a small assembling plant in Gujarat. Their main aim was to reduce transportation cost which was majorly because all parts were imported from foreign companies. Later the base was shifted to West Bengal because they were provided with cheaper raw materials and labor costs. This resulted in one of the most successful motor car of the country: the Ambassador. Apart from Ambassador, the company has been active in the production of different types of passenger cars, trucks and multi utility vehicles. They collaborated with Mitsubishi Motors, Japan to introduce mid-size premium segment cars. The company also brought the first utility vehicle in the country which was Mitsubishi Pajero. The company made collaboration with General Motors and their joint venture produced Bedford trucks and Vauxhall Motors during the 80s and 90s. The partnership with General Motors became 50-50 when they bought Hindustan Motor's plant at Gujarat in the year 1999. The company has been involved in various joint ventures. The Isuzu Joint venture was done to assemble and sell the Isuzu F series trucks in the country. These trucks were delivered from the factory with a fully built modern metal cabin that was not common with TATA and Ashok Leyland. The company has been serving in the automotive industry from the past seven decades and is still actively contributing to the country's automobile market. Their manufacturing facilities are in Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
