Automakers' obsession to name PVs ending with 'O'

Tata Nano: Ratan Tata's dream project to manufacture the most small and affordable car for the Indian market. The small size and small engine of the car made it easy for the company to call it as Nano.
Maruti Suzuki Celerio was first launched in India with six variants on offer. The company also launced the diesel variants of the car in 2015 but was discontinued in Feb 2017. Maruti Suzuki had invested Rs 900 crore for the development of smaller diesel engines.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno: Baleno was first introduced in India as a sedan and last year the company launched the hatch version of the car and is among the top 5 selling cars for the company. Maruti Suzuki also introduced a perforamce variant of the car - Baleno RS and intrduced a 1.oL boosterjet engine for the first time.
Ford Figo: Internally codenamed as B562 the sucompact sedan is manufactured by Ford India in its plant in Chennai and Sanand. The car is based on Mark V European Ford Fiesta hatchback and is being sold in developing countries since March 2010.
Tata Motors was forced to change the name of the car from Zica to Tiago after the outburst of Zika virus. Tata Tiago is derived from the Tata Kite project. Interestingly, Lionel Messi who is the brand ambassador for Tata Tiago has a son whose name is Thiago.
Tata Indigo: Tata Indigo was the first sub-compact sedan from the company and probably the sedan in the industry to enjoy the sub-4-meter benefits. The car is based on the Tata Indica hatch and both the cars have similar design. Current ongoing model of the car is the Indigo CS.
Volkswagen Polo brand globally has been in existence since 1975. However, India got the Volkswagen Polo hatch only in 2009. Currently the company sells the standard variant of Polo, performance variant (Polo GT) and the Polo Cross in India. Volkswagen Polo has also been one of the most successful car for the Indian arm of the German car maker.
Volkswagen Vento: Volkswagen Polo based sedan was named as Vento. In Italian and Portuguese Vento means 'wind' that where the name is derived from. The compact sedan is manufactured by Volkswagen in emerging markets like India, Russia and South Africa. Volkswagen India also exports this car to countries like Mexico, Malaysia.
Volkswagen Ameo: The first ever lower-C segment sedan from Volkswagen in India. The car is marketed as "German engineering with an Indian heart." This the third car from VW India that ends with 'o' after Volkwagen Polo and Volkswagen Vento.
Nissan Terrano: Nissan Terrano shares its platform with Renault Duster. The car was first launched in 2014 and curretly is the only SUV in the company's portfolio with X-Trail hybrid launching soon. Nissan Terrano also received a mild upgrade in March 2017.
Mahindra Scorpio: Without a doubt Scorpio is Mahindra's flagship model and has been a successful SUV since its first launch in 2002. The current generation on sale is the 3rd generation Scorpio which was launched in 2014. Mahindra exports its Scorpio to all its export markets. In Western Europe the car is sold as Mahindra Goa.
Mahindra Xylo was codenamed as Ingenio during its production phase. Mahindra had invested Rs 550 crore on this project and the production of Xylo commenced first in 2008 and the vehicle was launched in 2009. The UV is based on the Mahindra Scorpio's ladder frame chassis.
Mahindra XUV 500 was designed and developed at Mahindra R&D centre in Chennai and Nashik plant. During its development the SUV was codenamed W201. It is the company's first monocoque chassis based vehicle.
Mahindra Verito: Joint venture between Mahindra-Renault formed in 2007 had only one product rolled out in the name on Logan. The car became Verito in 2010 once the joint venture ended. Since then Mahindra has introduced Verito Vibe and recently the Mahindra's electric division launched the e-Verito.
Mahindra TUV 300 (as the company would to call Mahindra TUV three double o) SUV is built on the same platform as Mahindra Scorpio and also gets the same enigne as in Scorpio and XUV 500. The engine however is tuned differently to reduce power.
Interesting to know that Mahindra's production line that rolls out Quanto and Xylo can produce a mix of both simultaneously and the combined production capacity is up to 7000 units per month. Mahindra invested Rs 100 crore for the Quanto project. The mini SUV is also exported to other countries like South Africa, Europe and Chile.
Mahindra KUV 100 is also pronounced as Mahindra KUV 1 double o. KUV stands for 'Kool Utility Vehicle' and is the youngest member of the Mahindra's SUV family. It also gets Mahindra's first indigenously developed 1.2 L 3-cylinder mFalcon G80 MPFI engine.
Mahindra Bolero is an off-road vehicle based on Mahindra Armada Grand. The first generation of Bolero which was launched in 2000 was equiped with a Peugeot 2.5L engine and from with launch of second generation Mahindra rolled out its in-house engine. Mahindra Bolero has been one of the most successful model for the company.
Honda Mobilio is a seven seater MPV which was first introduced globally in 2001 and had a successful run till 2008 till Honda Freed was introduced. Honda reintroduced the model in 2014 first in Indonesia and then into Indian market. The company also launched the Honda Mobilio RS variant.
Maruti Suzuki Eeco was introduced in 2010 and is essentially a stripped down version of Maruti Suzuki Versa. The company tags this car as perfect car for perfect occasion but is being mostly for commercial purposes.
Honda Brio: Brio means vivacity or verve in Italian. In Indonesia the car is known as Satya which aligns to the country's low cost green car program. Honda Brio was first showcased at the Thailand Motor Show in 2010and later sold in markets like India, South Africa, Philippines in 2011. The car recieved a cosmetic change in 2016 in India.
