Meet Tesla's first all electric SUV Model X

Electric vehicle maker Tesla Motors has unveiled its first all electric SUV on September 29. At the launch, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said "the Model X sets a new bar for automotive engineering, with unique features. It should attract new customers - particularly women - to the brand".
The floor-mounted battery lowers the center of gravity so that the risk of rollover is about half that of any vehicle in its class. It has active sensors with emergency braking and collision avoidance systems, and its front trunk acts as large, impact absorbing crumple zone. Its medical grade HEPA filter removes pollen, bacteria, viruses and pollution from cabin air.
The double-hinged falcon-wing doors need less than a foot of clearance to open, and they're fitted with sensors so they won't trap hands or hit cars parked next to them. They allow easy access to second and third row seats from even a tight parking space.
Model X is able to achieve 250 miles of range. At 0.24, Model X's drag coefficient is 20% lower than the next best SUV, the company claims. In addition, there is an active spoiler deployed from the rear liftgate to optimise highway efficiency and stability.
Model X has an all glass panoramic windshield in production, which the company claims is the largest in size compared with any other SUV. Its optimised solar tinting and obstruction-free view creates unlimited visibility for the driver and all passengers.
It will be available in three seat colours - ultra white, tan leather, and black leather; and in two seating configurations - six and seven - seater.
Navigation, music and cabin controls are accessed through a 17-inch dashboard touch screen. Some of the features are - Maps and navigation with real time traffic updates, GPS enabled Homelink, Automatic keyless entry, with automatically opening front doors, Four child seat attachments, two in each passenger row, etc.
Model X's closest competitor is the plug-in hybrid Porsche Cayenne SUV, which starts at $77,200. At the lower end of the market, there's the $32,000 Kia Soul EV, an electric crossover, but it only has a 93-mile range. Toyota briefly sold an electric version of the RAV4 SUV, but that was discontinued last year.

Only a fraction of the sippy - cup set will be able to afford the Model X, even with a $7,500 federal tax credit. A fully loaded performance model is $142,000; exact pricing of the base model hasn't been released, but Musk said the Model X will cost $5,000 more than an equivalent Model S, or around $93,000.
