The auction marked the second sale by the world's top metals consumer this month as the government aims to rein in skyrocketing commodity prices. "The national reserves are sufficient, (we are) confident and capable to stabilise expectations and cool the market," state media Xinhua cited an official from the reserve's administration as saying.

Russian tax brews up perfect aluminium premium storm: Andy Home

Premiums, which a physical buyer pays on top of the cash LME price, are surging. The CME Midwest United States premium has leapt to record highs above $660 per tonne, meaning a local manufacturer is paying an all-in price in excess of $3,000 per tonne. The trigger for the latest jump in premiums is the imposition of an export tax on Russian aluminium, a key supply source for both European and U.S. markets.

Aluminium rattled by signs of "green" disruption in China: Andy Home

The suspensions are small, at around 200,000 tonnes of annualised capacity, according to Citi analysts. That's not going to make much physical market impact when China's national aluminium output production surged by 8.4% in the first two months of the year. But the significance is the direction of travel. China is embarking on the road to decarbonisation, a journey that poses hard questions of a power-hungry sector such as aluminium smelting.
